Which lens is right for you?

This extensive article by Phillip Bloom outlines essential lenses for both crop-sensor cameras (T1i, T21, 60D, 7D, etc) and full-frame cameras (5D Mark II).  Included in the story is a side-by-side cost/benefit comparison between prime and zoom lenses.

Reason #1 the CEMC could use macro lenses: beautiful video/stills like this.  This video was shot with a 5D Mark II and a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens.

Which DSLR is right for you?

Great read on the differences between the current crop of DSLRs with HD shooting capabilities.  Guess what’s on the list?  The Canon Rebel T2i, which the CEMC may be getting its own crop of this fall.

CEMC secret menu item #1

It’s widely known that the technology monitors at the CEMC have a whole stash of  equipment piled away rarely used by the general student population and kept out of the gear reservation binders.  Just like In ‘n Out’s famed secret menu, you generally need to know about this equipment before you can use it.

Well, the blog is out to expose all your TMs’ secrets.  Item number one on the CEMC secret menu is royalty and license-free production music.  Yes, anyone looking to get their mitts on some fly beats they won’t have to pay for when their work is published or broadcast is in luck.

Here’s a quick sample of the individually-themed music CDs we have for reservation:

1) Stingers and Tags

2) Pastoral

3) Short Themes

4) Folkstyles

5) The Outback

6) Modern Industrial

7) Rhythm and Blues

8) Classical Piano

9) Romance and Drama

10) Movie Scores

A ton of videos making their way into the blog today.  This is a short lecture by Alfred Hitchcock to some filmmaking students regarding the use of audience tension in his films.  In addition to the masterful conveyance of  cinematic storytelling technique, Hitchcock’s seventeen chins hiding his neck make this a must watch.

For all those aspiring filmmakers dabbling in the ever-expanding world of DSLR video, this recipe for a relatively-cheap follow focus is for you (for you nubies, a follow focus is a mechanism to enable smooth rack focus shots during recording).  Some professional follow focus units can cost hundreds of dollars – this one seems to be dramatically less expensive while still cleaning up those jittery in-camera focus maneuvers.

The above video outlines a quick quide to using a DSLR for video with a separate audio recorder.  While this gearhead uses a 5D Mark II and a Zoom H4N audio recorder as his tools, the same skills can be applied to equipment freely available at the CEMC: a Canon Rebel T1i and a TASCAM audio recorder.

Equipment notes: LK #4 and T1i #1

Some CEMC equipment was bound to break sooner or later.  As of right now, video light kit #4 and Canon Rebel T1i #1 are out of commission.

On a side note, the checkout room is currently out of T1i cameras.  They’re renting like hot cakes over the long weekends.  Apparently, people get married when it’s nice outside and like to have pictures of it.If you’d like to reserve one in the near future, go ahead and email the CEMC at:
